BRP Holder Travel to Europe: What You Need to Know (2026)

Last updated: March 2026 • 16 min read • All visa-free claims verified against official government sources

The short answer: UK BRP/eVisa holders can visit Europe, but most nationalities need a Schengen visa for EU countries. However, several non-Schengen European countries are visa-free for all UK residence permit holders regardless of nationality. This guide explains exactly which countries fall into each category.

Overview: Your European Travel Options as a UK BRP Holder

Europe is the most popular travel destination for UK residents, but the rules for BRP/eVisa holders are more complex than for British passport holders. Here is how European countries break down for you:

Visa-Free (UK residence recognised)

Albania, Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia — These non-Schengen countries explicitly allow entry for holders of UK visas and residence permits, regardless of passport nationality. No additional visa needed.

e-Visa Available (nationality-dependent)

Turkey — Certain nationalities with UK residence can apply for a Turkish e-visa online. Not a blanket BRP benefit.

Common Travel Area (no visa needed)

Ireland — UK residents can travel to Ireland under the Common Travel Area arrangement. Ireland is not part of the Schengen Area.

Visa Required (most nationalities)

29 Schengen countries (France, Spain, Italy, Germany, etc.) — Your UK BRP/eVisa does not help. Visa requirement is based on passport nationality. Most UK BRP holders from India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh, etc. need a Schengen visa.

Visa-Free European Countries for UK BRP/eVisa Holders

The following European countries have been verified against official government sources as allowing visa-free entry for UK visa and residence permit holders, regardless of passport nationality:

Albania — 90 days in any 180-day period

Albania allows visa-free entry for holders of valid Schengen, UK, EU, and US visas or residence permits. This is one of the most popular visa-free destinations for UK BRP holders, with affordable prices (GBP 30-50/day), stunning Albanian Riviera beaches, and UNESCO World Heritage sites in Berat and Gjirokaster. Your UK eVisa must be valid for the duration of your stay.

Serbia — 90 days in any 180-day period

Since 8 November 2014, holders of valid UK visas or residence permits can enter Serbia without a visa. Belgrade is a major tourist destination with excellent nightlife, the historic Kalemegdan Fortress, and outstanding food. Budget approximately GBP 30-50 per day.

Montenegro — 30 days

Montenegro allows visa-free entry for UK residence permit holders. The Bay of Kotor (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the beaches of Budva rival those of Croatia at a fraction of the cost. Budget GBP 40-70 per day.

eVisa warning: Montenegro’s border systems have had documented difficulty verifying UK eVisas. Carry a printed copy of your eVisa status page and contact the Montenegrin embassy before travelling to confirm current procedures.

North Macedonia — 15 days per entry

North Macedonia currently allows visa-free entry for holders of multiple-entry UK visas or residence permits. Maximum stay is 15 days per entry, up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This is a temporary measure through 31 December 2026 and may not be renewed. Lake Ohrid (UNESCO site), Matka Canyon, and Skopje are the main attractions.

Gibraltar — 21 days

As a British Overseas Territory, Gibraltar allows relatively straightforward entry for UK residents. See the famous Rock, the Barbary macaques, and enjoy the Mediterranean climate. Gibraltar is directly accessible from Spain (a short walk across the border from La Línea de la Concepción).

Schengen Countries: Visa Required for Most BRP Holder Nationalities

The 29 Schengen Area countries require a separate Schengen visa for most nationalities that hold UK BRP/eVisas. Your UK residence status has no bearing on Schengen entry rules — only your passport nationality matters.

Common misconception: Many travel blogs incorrectly state that a UK BRP allows visa-free travel to Schengen countries. This is false. Since Brexit, UK residence has no effect on Schengen visa requirements. If your nationality requires a Schengen visa, you must apply for one regardless of how long you have lived in the UK.

Nationalities that need a Schengen visa include: Indian, Pakistani, Nigerian, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan, Ghanaian, Chinese, Filipino, Egyptian, Zimbabwean, Kenyan, and most other African, South Asian, and Middle Eastern passport holders.

Nationalities exempt from Schengen visa include: American, Canadian, Japanese, Australian, New Zealand, Brazilian, Malaysian, Mexican, Argentine, and South Korean passport holders (among others).

The Schengen visa costs EUR 80 for adults, takes approximately 15 calendar days to process, and allows stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period across all Schengen countries. For a detailed application guide, see our Schengen Visa Guide for UK BRP Holders.

UK-Ireland Common Travel Area

The United Kingdom and Ireland operate a Common Travel Area (CTA), which predates both countries’ former EU membership and continues after Brexit. Under the CTA:

  • UK residents (including BRP/eVisa holders) can travel to Ireland without a separate visa
  • Ireland is NOT part of the Schengen Area, so you do not need a Schengen visa to visit
  • You must carry your valid passport and proof of UK immigration status when travelling to Ireland
  • There are no routine passport controls between the UK and Ireland on the island of Ireland (land border), but airlines and ferries do check ID
  • Some nationalities may still need an Irish visa despite holding a UK BRP — check with the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service (INIS)
Short Stay Visa Waiver Programme: Ireland operates a programme that allows holders of certain UK visas (specifically short-stay “C” visas) to visit Ireland without a separate Irish visa. This applies to nationals of several countries. Check the Irish government website for current eligible nationalities and visa types.

Turkey: e-Visa for Certain Nationalities with UK Residence

Turkey is not a blanket BRP-benefit country. Whether you can get a Turkish e-visa depends on your passport nationality. However, several nationalities that normally require a Turkish embassy visa can instead apply for a simplified e-visa if they hold a valid UK visa or residence permit.

Nationalities eligible for Turkish e-visa with UK residence

Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cape Verde, Egypt, India, Iraq, Libya, Nepal, Pakistan, Palestine, Philippines, Senegal, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Yemen, and others.

How to apply

  • Apply online at evisa.gov.tr (official Turkish government portal)
  • Stay: up to 30 days (single entry)
  • Fee varies by nationality (typically $20-60)
  • Processing: usually 1-5 business days
  • You will need your passport details and a valid credit/debit card
Warning: Not all nationalities are eligible for the Turkish e-visa, even with a UK BRP. Some nationalities (including Kenyan passport holders) must still apply at a Turkish embassy regardless of UK residence. Check your eligibility at evisa.gov.tr before booking travel.

European Countries Commonly but Incorrectly Listed as Visa-Free

Many travel blogs list these European countries as “visa-free for BRP holders.” Our Phase 2 research, which verified every claim against official government sources, found these claims to be incorrect:

Georgia — DEBUNKED

Georgia’s visa-free policy is based entirely on passport nationality, not UK residence. Citizens of 94 countries can enter for up to 1 year, but this is determined by your passport. A Nigerian or Indian passport holder with a UK BRP would still need a Georgian visa unless their nationality is on Georgia’s exempt list. The Georgian government page makes no mention of UK residence permits as a qualifying document.

Bosnia & Herzegovina — DEBUNKED

Bosnia exempts holders of Schengen, EU member state, and US visas or residence permits — but specifically excludes UK visas and residence permits from this exemption. UK BRP holders whose nationality requires a Bosnian visa must apply at the embassy.

Kosovo — DEBUNKED

Kosovo exempts holders of Schengen visas only. UK visas and residence permits are not recognised for visa-free entry. If your nationality requires a Kosovo visa, you must apply regardless of UK residence.

Why does this misinformation spread? Many travel content sites compile country lists from other blogs without checking official sources. Our research found that claims about Georgia, Bosnia, and Kosovo being BRP-benefit countries appear to have originated from a single inaccurate source and been replicated across dozens of websites.

eVisa Transition and European Travel

The UK’s transition from physical BRP cards to digital eVisas has created practical challenges for European travel. Here is what you need to know:

Key Timeline

  • 31 December 2024: All physical BRP cards expired
  • 1 June 2025: Grace period ended — expired BRPs no longer accepted anywhere
  • 25 February 2026: Home Office stopped issuing vignette stickers
  • Now (March 2026): All UK immigration status is fully digital

Impact on European Travel

  • Montenegro: Border police have had documented difficulty verifying UK eVisas. This is a known issue. Carry printed proof and contact the embassy before travel.
  • Albania and Serbia: No widespread issues reported with eVisa acceptance as of March 2026.
  • Schengen embassies: Some have been slow to update their processes. Contact the specific embassy to confirm what format of UK status proof they accept.

What to Do Before Travelling to Europe

  1. Set up your UKVI account at gov.uk/get-access-evisa
  2. Ensure your current passport is linked to your eVisa
  3. Print your eVisa status page as backup
  4. Generate a share code before travel (valid 90 days)
  5. Carry your valid passport (the one linked to your eVisa)
  6. Check with the destination embassy or border agency about eVisa acceptance

Practical Tips for European Travel as a UK BRP Holder

Combine Visa-Free Destinations

Albania, Serbia, Montenegro, and North Macedonia are all in the Western Balkans and can be combined into one trip. Fly into Tirana or Belgrade, and travel overland between countries. All four are visa-free for BRP holders.

Budget-Friendly Europe

The Balkans are the most affordable part of Europe. Daily budgets of GBP 30-50 cover accommodation, food, and transport in Albania, Serbia, and North Macedonia. This is 50-70% cheaper than Western Europe.

Flight Options

Direct flights from London to Tirana, Belgrade, and Podgorica are available with Wizz Air, Ryanair, and national carriers. Fares can be as low as GBP 30-60 one way if booked in advance.

Travel Insurance

Always get travel insurance for European trips. Your NHS coverage does not extend abroad (the GHIC/EHIC has limited coverage in some countries). For Schengen visa applications, insurance with minimum EUR 30,000 medical coverage is mandatory.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can UK BRP holders travel to Europe?

Yes. UK BRP/eVisa holders can visit Europe, but the rules depend on the specific country and your passport nationality. Albania, Serbia, Montenegro, and North Macedonia are visa-free for all UK residence permit holders. The 29 Schengen countries require most non-British passport holders to obtain a Schengen visa. Ireland is accessible under the Common Travel Area.

Which European countries are visa-free for UK BRP holders?

Verified visa-free: Albania (90 days), Serbia (90 days), Montenegro (30 days), North Macedonia (15 days, temporary through Dec 2026), and Gibraltar (21 days). Turkey offers e-visas for certain nationalities. Ireland is accessible via the Common Travel Area.

Do BRP holders need a Schengen visa for Europe?

If your nationality requires a Schengen visa (India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh, etc.), then yes. Your UK BRP/eVisa does not grant Schengen visa exemption. See our Schengen Visa Guide for full application details.

Can UK BRP holders travel to Ireland?

Yes. The Common Travel Area allows UK residents to travel to Ireland. Ireland is not in the Schengen Area. However, some nationalities may need an Irish visa — check with the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service.

Is Turkey visa-free for UK BRP holders?

Not exactly. Certain nationalities (Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, etc.) with a UK residence permit can apply for a Turkish e-visa at evisa.gov.tr. This is nationality-specific, not a blanket BRP benefit. Not all nationalities are eligible.

Can I visit Georgia with a UK BRP?

No, not based on UK residence. Georgia’s visa-free policy is based on passport nationality only. This is commonly misreported on travel blogs. If your nationality requires a Georgian visa, a UK BRP does not help.

How has the eVisa transition affected European travel?

Since BRPs expired on 31 December 2024, you must prove your UK status digitally. Montenegro has had documented issues verifying eVisas at borders. Print your eVisa status page and generate a share code before travelling.

Can I visit Bosnia or Kosovo with a UK BRP?

No. Bosnia exempts Schengen/EU/US visa holders but specifically excludes UK visas. Kosovo exempts Schengen visa holders only. UK BRP holders must apply for embassy visas for both countries.
