Practical Tips for Travelling in Europe

Getting There

Most of these destinations have direct flights from UK airports. Budget airlines like Wizz Air and Ryanair serve Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia. Turkish Airlines offers extensive connections via Istanbul. Georgia is accessible with direct flights from London Gatwick and Luton.

Currency & Costs

The Balkans and Caucasus are significantly cheaper than Western Europe. Expect to spend 30–50% less on accommodation, food and transport compared to the UK. Turkey uses the Turkish Lira, Georgia uses the Lari, and the Balkan countries use their own currencies (Albania — Lek, Serbia — Dinar, etc.). Gibraltar uses the Gibraltar Pound (at par with GBP) and also accepts British Pounds.

The Schengen Question

Remember that these countries are specifically outside the Schengen Area. If you want to visit Schengen countries (France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Greece, etc.), you will need a separate Schengen visa. Some travellers combine a visa-free Balkan trip with a Schengen application for maximum European exploration.

Safety

All countries listed here are generally safe for tourists. Exercise normal precautions as you would anywhere. Check the FCDO travel advice for the latest safety information for each destination.
