Getting There
Direct flights from London to Mexico City (around 11 hours) and Cancun (around 10 hours) are available with British Airways, Aeromexico and other carriers. Panama is accessible via connecting flights through US hubs (Houston, Miami) or via direct services from European airports. Flight times to Panama City are approximately 10–11 hours with connections.
US Transit Note
If your flights connect through the United States, you will need a valid US visa or ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization). ESTA is only available to citizens of Visa Waiver Program countries. Most UK eVisa holders with non-VWP passports will need a US transit visa (B1/B2 or C-1). Consider routing through European hubs or flying direct to avoid this requirement.
Currency & Costs
Mexico uses the Mexican Peso (MXN) and is exceptionally good value for UK visitors. A quality meal at a local restaurant can cost under £5. Panama uses the US Dollar (USD) and is moderately priced — cheaper than the UK but more expensive than Mexico. Both countries have widely available ATMs, and credit cards are accepted in most tourist areas.
Safety
Both Mexico and Panama are generally safe for tourists in popular areas, but exercise standard precautions. In Mexico, stick to well-travelled tourist regions and check the FCDO travel advice for areas to avoid. Panama City is safe in tourist districts but take care in outlying areas. Use official taxis or ride-hailing apps in both countries.
Health
No mandatory vaccinations are required for either country, but hepatitis A and typhoid vaccines are recommended. In lowland and coastal areas, mosquito-borne diseases (dengue, Zika) are present — bring insect repellent and consider antimalarials for rural Panama. Drink bottled water in Mexico as a precaution. Travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage is essential.
Language
Spanish is the official language of both countries. In tourist areas, English is widely spoken, but learning basic Spanish phrases will significantly enhance your experience and is appreciated by locals. Mexico City, Cancun, Panama City and other major tourist hubs have strong English-language infrastructure.
